09.27.09 25th Annual Abbot Kinney Festival. www.abbotkinney.org : Founded in 1984, the Abbot Kinney Festival is the second largest of its kind in Southern California. This popular community event attracts nearly 150,000 attendees best defined as educated professionals who are arts-minded, unpretentiously hip, health-focused, environmentally conscious, and family-oriented. Over 10,000 parents and children participate in day-long cultural activities inside of the festival's Youth & Family Courtyard. The festival also includes approximately 350 artisan vendors, three live music stages, three food courts, and a beer garden. Parking shuttles are available from public lots west of Abbot Kinney, in Playa Vista, and in other locations. Admission is free. Net proceeds from sponsorships, vendor booth fees, commemorative t-shirts, event-run concessions, and festival guide advertising are reinvested into the community to local nonprofits, particularly those that serve at-risk youth. The event is produced by the Abbot Kinney Association. Here is their mission statement: The Abbot Kinney Festival Association (AKFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that produces community activities, including an annual community festival, to welcome people throughout Southern California to celebrate the community, beauty, and goodwill of Venice. Proceeds from the AKFA's activities support Venice-based community organizations with programs and services for youth and families. This years sponsors include Whole Foods, AMP, Pardee Properties, Anheuser-Busch,Brand X, Experience LA, Honest, Juanita's, New Belgium, U-Turn 2 Tap, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Venice Neighborhood Council, Kaiser Permanente, WestEnd, George Chung Realtors, Guitar Center, Original Ginerger Brew Reed's. 09.28.08 24th Annual Abbot Kinney Street Festival. www.abbotkinney.org : Insert taken from the Abbot Kinney District Association's website. http://www.abbotkinney.org/index.html The Abbot Kinney Festival began in 1984, as an annual community event to celebrate the tradition of Venice as a unique and diverse community and to pay homage to its founder, Abbot Kinney. In 1989, the Festival sponsor, The Abbot Kinney District Assn, was incorporated as a non-profit, 501c3, serving the community at large. Managed by a largely volunteer Board of Directors, the AKDA has contributed funding towards numerous local youth and beautification projects, including planting the palm trees that line Abbot Kinney, providing playground equipment to Westminster School, as well as offering support to local projects and organizations such as Inside Out Community Arts, Venice Arts, Venice Mural Restoration and the Venice Family Clinic. Over the years, The Abbot Kinney Festival has grown tremendously. The event, which is free to attend, extends the span of Abbot Kinney Blvd from Venice Blvd to Main St (including most side streets) and attracts nearly 150,000 people. Visitors enjoy a large Youth and Family area, over 300 Arts and Craft Vendors, multiple stages of live music, a Green Living Area, and diverse food choices. In 2007, the Festival began the journey of "Going Green" and continues to look for ways to lessen its impact on the environment. We strive towards producing a zero waste event.
