Click on the arrow below to view other recent events covered. On Firday The Fruit Gallery presented "A Night on Westminster.” Unfortunately, when I arrived at 8:00 p.m. the event was shut down. The event was scheduled for 6:00-10:00 p.m. I thought if I arrived at 8:00 p.m. the event would be hopping. I was wrong. I caught the tail end of it. This is what happened. The band started playing at 7:00 p.m. and at 7:05 the cops came and shut it down. Unfortuantely there were no permits so the event couldn't proceed on. Too bad for everyone. The intent was for the neighborhood to mix, mingle, enjoy live music and take advantage of the awsome Westminster Square Food Court staying open late and offering free snacks. Oh well, it was a good try Nina , James and Westminster Square. Don't give up. If you need support from the community we are there for you. We look forward to next month's event. 1.18.09 Fill the Food Bank. Venice For Change, Fruit Gallery, Alex Rose. Amanda, Venice Paparazzi, Venice : On January 18, a dozen volunteers met at the Fruit Gallery Juice Shop at the Venice Beach Boardwalk to collect and sort donations for Fill the Food Bank, a food drive to benefit St. Joseph Center. Members of the community, including City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, flocked to the Boardwalk to donate canned goods, non-perishable food items, toiletries, baby food and formulas, and single serving snacks. St. Joseph Center is devoted to serving the needs of the working poor, veterans, and homeless men and women of the Venice community. As a result of the recent economic downturn, the demand for the St. Joseph Center Food Pantry and Food banks all across Los Angeles rose by 41%. Fill the Food Bank will continue through President-elect Obama's inauguration in an attempt to rejuvenate a commitment of community service and prove that change was always more than a campaign slogan. This year they almost doubled that amount. Many volunteers spent the night before and the morning of Thanksgiving, baking, cooking, roasting turkeys and/or mashing potatoes. In addition to the potluck, there was a canned food and toiletry drive. Beautiful music was provided by the Wailens Band and Michael Jost. Venice Paparazzi was joined by photographers Kirstography and Aliza Almaraz, Venice residents Alex Rose, Jill Morley, Ross Alexander Wilson and Red Cross' George to provide over 50 people with free photos, stamps, holiday cards and envelopes. Thank you once again to each and every one of you for making our vision a reality at the 2nd annual Feed the Beach on Thanksgiving Day. We could not have done this without you. No matter how small or big, your contribution fully counted as we went thru every last tray of food that was donated. Everyone had a great time, the energy was high, the music was vibing, the clouds cleared away for the day, and we all came together as one big family celebrating and giving thanks for having each other. Once again the spirit of Venice came out strong in support of this event. We met our projected mark of feeding about 700 people this year. This goes to show that with the right people and loving hearts anything is possible. The amount of support, contributions, donations, and help, this event became the center point of this holiday. Throughout the course of the event and the time that led up to this event we received a remarkable response of interest. We had 100 volunteers come out to serve, set-up, clean-up, shred turkeys, and tear down. We had Impacting Hearts Ministries come out with 17 young teenagers, who are foster children, to help serve and give back to this community. This was their 2nd year to come back and be a part of something they will remember. We want to thank the 200 plus individuals who donated and contributed to this event. We raised over $1,000 in monetary donations which went towards food, supplies, and toiletries. The Rotary Club of Venice Marina was able to raise an additional $1,000 for this successful event. The Rotary Club of Venice Marina played a huge role in spreading the word, raising money, and collecting over 20 complete dinners. This goes to show that, with out those who donated and contributed to this event, we would have not had an event as successful as this one was. It takes the help of everyone to give in order for an event to happen. We also want to recognize our local media coverage Beach Head Newspaper and Venice Paparazzi who promoted this event through their paper, website, and email database. Venice Paparazzi had a photo booth at the event in which, they took postcard sized photographs of people attending the event. The postcard was printed and postage was provided free of charge sponsored and donated by Venice Paparazzi. This is what made this event more memorable and special to many who got their picture taken and were given an opportunity to share it with family and friends.
