On January 18, a dozen volunteers met at the Fruit Gallery Juice Shop at the Venice Beach Boardwalk to collect and sort donations for Fill the Food Bank, a food drive to benefit St. Joseph Center. Members of the community, including City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, flocked to the Boardwalk to donate canned goods, non-perishable food items, toiletries, baby food and formulas, and single serving snacks.
St. Joseph Center is devoted to serving the needs of the working poor, veterans, and homeless men and women of the Venice community. As a result of the recent economic downturn, the demand for the St. Joseph Center Food Pantry and Food banks all across Los Angeles rose by 41%. Fill the Food Bank will continue through President-elect Obama's inauguration in an attempt to rejuvenate a commitment of community service and prove that change was always more than a campaign slogan.
