This film was directed by Oliver Stone and cast members included Val Kolmer, Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLaclan, Frank Whaley and Kevin Dillion. There was also live music performance by local band Sugar Bitch, food provided by Primitivo and beverages by.... Prior to the Doors' screening, the festival presented a fascinating documentary entitled "unconquered: The life of Allan Hauser" (Dir: Bryan Beasley, 2009). "The Poker House directed by Lori Petty" : The Other Venice Film Festival's Local Maverick Opening Night happened on October 16th, 2009 at at Sparc, the Social and Public Art Resource Center on Venice Blvd. on October 15th and 16th. www.sparcmurals.org. Local Maverick spotlight: Film: The Poker House Director Lori Petty. Writers: Stephen J. Cannell and Michael Dubelko. Cast: Selma Blair, David Alan Grier, Jennifer Lawrence and Bokeem Woodbine. Based on a true story, "The Poker House" is a day in the life of young Agnes, a teenage girl who lives with her two sisters and drug-addicted mother in a poor small town in iowa, circa 1976. Besides her family struggles at home, Agnes is constantly dealing with social pressures at school while forced to live a life which is far beyond her means. Along the way and incredible cast of characters, played by such actors as David Alan Girer and Bokeem Woodbine, help to show Agnes that, even when living in hard times, there is hope in "the Poker House." Q & A Session with venice Beach filmmaker Lori Petty followed the screening. About Lori Petty: director of "The Poker House", was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Before moving to Los Angeles, Ms. Petty worked several years as a graphic artist. She has starred in such Hollywood features as "a League of Their Own", "Point Break", the "Tank Girl" and "In the Army Now." "The Poker House" is a very personal film about her life growing up as a teenager, and we feel her work deserves recognition for its honesty, humility and tremendously superb craftsmanship Congratulations Lori! Venice Paparazzi rolled out the red carpet for the Other Venice Film Festival's opening night. The Other Venice Film Festival presented Venice local Catherine Hardwicke the Maverick Spotlight Award. Catherine exemplifies everything that Venice, and independent filmmaking, is all about. Past recipients of the Maverick Award have been given to Roger Corman, Werner Herzog, Tony Bill and Stacy Peralta. On the festival's opening night,they screened Catherine's breakthrough directorial debut film, Thirteen, starring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood. Thirteen chronicles the exciting, but troubled life of a teenage girl growing up in Southern California. Prior to the screening, a special Directors Cut of the trailer for Catherines upcoming feature film Twilight was screened. Twilight, a vampire film starring Robert Pattinson and Nikki Reed, is set to be released on November 21 st through Warner Bros. Studios. The night also consisted of an Art Show in the lobby of the Electric Lodge. An exhibition of artworks by Suzan Jones Oct. 9- Nov. 9 www.myspace.com/suzanjonesphotos. Food by Primitivom desert Arrangements by Edibles and music by Black Cat. Lastly there was a Q & A with Catherine Hardwicke and Nikki Reed.
