10.18.09 US OPEN PADDLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT : The following information was sent to me by Steve Gumplo of the United States Paddle Tennis Association. The United States Paddle Tennis Association (USPTA) hosted the United States Open Championships on October 17-18, 2009 at the Venice Beach Recreation Center. Hundreds of spectators watched as the best paddle tennis players from around the world competed in the sport's premier doubles tournament including some 60 doubles teams. In the Open Division, Los Angeles natives Daryl Lemon and Kent Seton defeated Aldo Burga of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Russ Garber of Stanford, CA 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 Sunday to take the most prestigious title in paddle tennis. The Open Division attracted one of the best draws in years. Several of the teams were very evenly matched and new teams such as professional tennis player Jan-Michael Gambill and his brother Tory Gambil went up against paddle tennis legends Sol Hauptman and Scott Friedman. The equally prestigious team of Doug Kolker and paddle tennis icon and former pro tennis player Vincent Van Patten were also in the draw, making it anyone's tournament. In the end, play was close throughout among these top teams and several others who competed well and could have won the title. All results are available online at http://www.theuspta.com. In the A Division Dennis Hightower and Reggie Longware defeated Nick Haridopolos and Russell Evan 8-5 8-2 and Danny O'Hara and Shane Falkenstein finished third. In the B Division Bill Borrmann and Mike Mulrooney defeated Mariann Lord and Betsy Starrett 8-2 with Mike Mozier and Terry Daly finishing third. In Ladies Doubles, Sonia Ode Lucci and Leslie Howard won a round robin format with a three way tie for second place between Jean Dillingham and Bonnie Stoll, Midge Hendricks and Kimberly Knab and Mariann Lord with Betsy Starrett. 07.12.09 Men's and Women's Doubles Paddle Tennis Championships. : The USPTA (United States Paddle Tennis Association) and Venice Beach Recreation and Parks hosted the Men's and Women's Doubles tournament in Venice Beach on July 11-12th, 2009. First place in the open division went to Mark and James and second place to Alex O'Brien and Dan Seton. The highlight of the event for me was meeting Bill Brothers, the man responsible for bringing the 11 Regualtion size paddle tennis courts to Venice Beach. Venice Paparazzi will be interviewing Bill in the future. About Paddle Tennis: The strokes, grips, scoring, and strategy of paddle tennis are the same as tennis. The server, however, is allowed only one underhand serve. In singles, the server must allow the return of serve to bounce once before rushing to the net. Also, the official paddle tennis ball is deadened. It is a regular pressurized tennis ball that has its internal pressure reduced by being punctured (with a hypodermic needle). When the ball is dropped from a height of six feet to the court surface, the bounce should be not less than 31 inches (the height of the net), and not more than 33 inches. The regulation court is 50 feet long by 20 feet wide. The same court is used for singles and doubles; there are no doubles alleys.
