The Venice Art Walls are in Danger!
The Venice Art Walls need your help. The program that issues free permits to artists to paint on the walls is in desperate need of funding. City of L.A. funding for this program is being cut due to the City of L.A. budget crises. Without a permit program, the City of L.A. has made it clear that it will close the area to painting. The area will be in great danger if this occurs.

The Venice Art Walls is the only place in the City of Los Angeles where artists can paint graffiti art on City of L.A. property legally. The area was formerly known as the Venice Graffiti Walls or the Graffiti Pit. ICU Art helped to preserve this area from destruction in 1999 when the City was remodeling the Ocean Front Walk and tore down the Venice Pavilion. ICU Art has been curating the walls since 2000 as a free, non-profit program for the graffiti artists of Los Angeles and the residents of Venice.

Come help to preserve this important cultural and historic landmark and the spirit of free expression in Venice. This is a rare opportunity to see or purchase some incredible artwork by some of California’s most sought after artists at amazing prices.
Current Program Only Funded Through July 1, 2008
The program that has been issuing the permits for artists to paint is funded only through July 1, 2008. When these funds run out, the walls will be closed to painting. All funds generated will go to The Chrysalis Project – the non-profit organization that helps to manage the Venice Art Walls program. The money will go specifically to pay the artists and other people who work as On-Site Supervisors issuing free permits to artists on weekends and City of L.A. holidays.

Venice Art Walls Paintout 2007 Sunday June 3, 2007 10am - 7pm
Artist Crews from all over Los Angeles will be repainting the walls of the Art Park on Sunday, June 3, 2007 from 10am to 7pm. DJ's will be playing Hip Hop, Reggae, Dub & Dancehall all day and an open mic will be held for spoken word. Vendors such as the Arts organization, crafts, and the Human Rights organization will be attending. Throughout the day we will be discussing the New Rules and the Pilot Program which will be going into effect with this event. Come make your voice heard on the Mic.

New Rules
The area is being renamed the Venice Public Art Walls.
The walls will be open only on weekends and CIty holidays.
The walls will be closed on weekdays to painting. Enforced by LAPD.
All artists will need a permit to paint at any time.
Permits will be free, and will be issued on-site by ICU Art.
Strict LAPD enforcement of anti-vandalism laws in the Venice area.
Minors can paint with brushes and rollers only.
Large walls are for pieces only.
Large walls require crews of at least 3 artists.
Last pieces up Sunday afternoon run all week.
Rules for Paintout
Artist crews will submit sketches to secure a space on large walls and cone structures.
Materials will be provided by ICU Art.
Artist arrive by 9am for wall assignments, paint and permits.
(bring valid I.D.)
Call (310) 535-7729 or email sketches@veniceartwalls.com for more info.

Why New Rules?
The walls are being threatened with removal unless tagging in the area is reduced and the area stays clean. Venice area residents have been complaining to the City of Los Angeles regarding tagging in the area. ICU Art has negotiated a Pilot Program with the City of Los Angeles in an effort to keep the walls up. We have developed this program as a six-month trail period to see if the program can succeed. The program is managed by ICU Art with the Graffiti Artist in mind. If the program is a success, there is the possibility of more yards in other parts of the city being opened. Please help make this program a success. Keep the walls alive.
Respect
No alcoholic beverages
No illegal drugs
No dogs on weekends at the beach
No tagging in the neighborhood
Must be 18 years of age to use spray paint
Help preserve this area for art!

This event is brought to you by ICU Art and co-sponsored by The Chrysalis Project & Sol Foundation.

Venice Paparazzi has been selected as the official photo agency of the Venice Art Walls. The partnership between ICU Art and Venice Paparazzi has been extended through June 1, 2008. Edizen Stowell of Venice Paparazzi and her team of event photographers will be documenting the work on the walls on Sunday afternoons or early Monday morning. Select pieces will be uploaded to the Venice Art Walls site and may be uploaded to thehttp://www.venicepaparazzi.com site as well. This is an important project, as it will help us to document and highlight some of the high-quality artwork that occurs on the walls as part of the current permit program. This will also help us to determine which pieces are being painted mid-week without a permit, so that we can address this problem from an informed viewpoint.
